Teatro del Sueño presents Bajo tierra [Underground] **The players - José Guadalupe Posada and Lady Death By Alejandra Flores Teatro del Sueño, directed by Francisco Solis, brings its theater production Underground—an original play by David Olguín—to the 3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival, Xcaret 2008, featuring engraver José Guadalupe Posada and his famous Lady Death. The magnificent stage at Xcaret Park`s La Isla Restaurant is the perfect background for one of the peninsula`s best known troupes, whose skill is sure to seduce our esteemed audience with the magic of theater. `Underground`, explains Francisco Solis, `speaks of our `Mexican-ness` and reassesses our history, heritage and national identity. This production explores both Mexico`s humor and its plastic arts in an attempt to offer an attractive style of theater that allows us to assess the play through its fanciful images and texts and that, in a fun way, illustrates the very essence of theater itself: characters that pretend to be others and reinvent themselves moment by moment.` Underground is set at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution, a time when Death lurked around every corner. Lady Death, as she is also known, comes for Posada, but it won`t be easy because the artist, an example of Mexican ingenuity, will try to escape from her. In exchange for more time on Earth, he proposes changing her image and creates an engraving that makes her look beautiful. Death—a woman after all—, sick with vanity, accepts; and that is when José Guadalupe Posada takes flight. This endearing Mexican character hopes to escape death by living other lives. Thus, we understand that the magic of theater is the best form of escapism: the possibility of living many other lives. Underground and the music of Alberto Rosas Argáez will leave a deep impression on the public, who will have the opportunity to applaud this excellent play on November 1st and 2nd at Xcaret Park`s La Isla Restaurant.
