Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué, se aventuran al Xibalbá [Adventure in Xibalbá]

**Said to be one of the best stage productions of the festival

By Alejandra Flores

After the resounding success of the Trip through the Underworld entitled Las aventuras de Hunahpú e Ixbalanqué en el Xibalbá, la morada de los muertos [The Adventures of Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué in Xibalbá, the Dwelling Place of the Dead], the 3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival, Xcaret 2008 once again offers one of the most disquieting, hilarious, edifying and fascinating stage productions of actress and stage producer Alejandra Diaz de Cossío.

After long working days with volunteers from Playa del Carmen`s seniors` groups and players from the Park`s theater troupe, Diaz de Cossío stated that the staging of The Adventures of Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué in Xibalbá, the Dwelling Place of the Dead was, and continues to be, one of her greatest professional challenges, involving as it does everything from research, staging and direction to creation of shadow puppets and costumes.

`The production has great educational value`, adds the artist.  `The fact that the cast is comprised of people from the local community and staff from Xcaret Park, especially its dancers, makes this a unique and fascinating stage production.  The scenery, props and costumes created by Xcaret Park for this Trip are, as always, world-class… It has been very intense but also very exciting to know that those who had the opportunity to experience the trip to Xibalbá want to repeat it and take those who missed it with them`, commented Diaz de Cossío.

The Adventures of Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué in Xibalbá, the Dwelling Place of the Dead is a theatrical voyage through the caves of Xcaret Park where the audience moves along with the players and a dozen actors seed a basic knowledge of the Quiché Mayas` ancient legends amongst the audience.

The natural magic of the caves contributes to the enjoyment, as does the mysterious appearance of characters who silently serve as guides to those accompanying Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué during their trials and tribulations in Xibalbá.  In order to be part of this unique voyage, we suggest you keep an eye on the schedules because we have limited capacity.  Departures are scheduled every half hour from 4 p.m. on, with the last departure at 10 p.m.  The trip, The Adventures of Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué in Xibalbá, the Dwelling Place of the Dead will be offered every day of the four-day 3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival, Xcaret 2008, from October 30th to November 2nd.
