Betsy Pecanins premier:  Blues y sombra [Blues and Shadow]

**Singing to the All the Saints and Souls on November 1st and 2nd

By Alejandra Flores

Betsy Pecanins premiers with Blues and Shadow: a Celebration of Life and Death, a special Day of the Dead concert created for the 3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival, Xcaret 2008.

Set against the natural backdrop of Xcaret Park`s Open Theater, Betsy Pecanins will surprise locals and strangers alike with a fascinating selection of songs that includes popular Mexican music and the literary dirges and poetic compositions of Jaime López and Rafael Mendoza, not to mention some of her own most popular musical creations.

For the first time in thirty years of professional life, Betsy Pecanins will venture into the musical heart and soul of Mexico`s songs to death, creating an unforgettable fusion of purposeful and innovative music accompanied by her ever-faithful band. The feelings and strength of these world-class musicians will join the flight of her voice to give meaning, as they always do, to the very breath that gives them life:  the Blues.

Born in Yuma, Arizona of an American father and Spanish mother, Betsy Pecanins has lived in Mexico since 1977 and is one of the country`s most beloved voices.  She has sung duets with renowned singers such as Tania Libertad, Margie Bermejo, Cecilia Toussaint, Eugenia Leon, Amparo Ochoa, Guillermo Briseño, and Blues singer Papa John Creach, amongst others.  Her long recording career and her performances with the Baja California Orchestra, the Mexico City Philharmonic—directed by Eduardo Garcia Barrios, Eduardo Diazmuñoz, Benjamin Juarez and Luis Herrera de la Fuente—speak of the quality of her musical interpretations, as does her long career as a composer.  Many remember her participation as the singing voice behind Lucha Reyes in Arturo Ripstein`s movie La reina de la noche and her songs featured in the movies Hasta morir, Dos crimenes, Cilantro y perejil and Asesino en serio.
