3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival

From October 30 to October the 2nd, starting at 4 pm, Xcaret park will be dressed in tzempazuchitl flowers, the smell of incense and the scintillating light of candles to celebrate its 3rd Life and Death Traditions Festival 2008.

This beautiful celebration of the banquet of souls or Halan Pixan will gather families from more than 39 Mayan communities that will be participating in the moving tradition of celebrating the dearly departed.

This magnificent fiesta will be joined by at least a hundred artists: painters, sculptors, musicians, dancers, chroniclers, puppet masters, artisans from all around the country that will dedicate their works of art to a common muse: Death.

We are also expecting the presentation of a great number of contemporary theater productions, created and performed by Quintana Roo’s indigenous communities, real essence of our Mayan customs and traditions.

In addition, we will enjoy the presence of two talented artists: award-winning actress Ofelia Medina with her play “Cada quien su Frida” (To each his Frida); and the extraordinary singer Betsy Pecanins with her concert “Blues y sombra, celebrando la vida y la muerte” (Blues and shadow, celebrating life and death).

Come and celebrate with us the colors, aromas and flavors of one of our purest traditions, the Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead festivities; designated in 2003 as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Don’t miss the chance of experiencing the magic in this festivity in honour of life, but dedicated to our Dearly Departed!
